Dogs may have fur coats but they need an extra layer when outdoors during the cold Winter months to keep them warm, just like humans do! Knitting and sewing have become very popular hobbies in recent years so we are asking all those who have time to knit or sew and help us to get as many coats as possible for the dogs in our care.
We also hope to raise awareness throughout the dog owning population about the importance of putting a coat on your canine when the temperature starts to drop.
Ann Bennett of Lismore Ladies Knitting Group pioneered the campaign in April, and said;
"I thought this was such a fantastic idea, what a wonderful way to use leftover wool to keep pooches warm. Our members have even started knitting coats for their doggies too!"
Some little tips for your jumper design:
- Please make it simple and practical for a dog to wear; no dangly adornments that a dog might be tempted to chew off and swallow.
- Feel free to use all your old bits and pieces of wool as the dogs aren't fussy what colours they wear!
- Choose a yarn that's easy to care for; look out for acrylics and washable fibres.
